You’re getting married! You have a wedding to plan, a fiancé to marry, and somewhere in the middle of all that excitement, you need to find THE dress. Maybe you’ve had your dream gown saved on Pinterest for years. Maybe you have absolutely NO idea what you want. Or maybe you’ve tried on a few dresses already and now you’re more confused than when you started. Wherever you are in the process, we’ve got you.
At Rouge Bridal, we want wedding dress shopping to be one of your favorite wedding-planning memories, not another thing on your to-do list that makes you want to pour a very large glass of wine.
Here are our best wedding dress shopping tips to help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to say YES!
1. When Should I Start Wedding Dress Shopping?
Ideally, you should start shopping for your wedding dress 12 months before your wedding, with This gives you breathing room! Why so early?
Most special-order gowns at Rouge Bridal take approximately 5–6 months to ship from the designer, plus transit time to our store. You’ll also want to allow about 3–4 months for alterations. And trust us, those months go by FAST. If your wedding is coming up sooner, don’t panic! All of the gowns in our collection are available to purchase and take home the same day. Depending on your timeline and the designer, a rush order may also be an option.
Rouge tip: Don’t assume you’re too late to find a wedding dress. Tell us your wedding date, and we’ll help you explore the options that work for your timeline.
2. Set Your Wedding Dress Budget Before Your Appointment
We LOVE a beautiful wedding gown. But you know what we love even more?
Helping you find a beautiful gown that fits your budget.
Before you start shopping, decide how much you’re comfortable spending and share that number with your stylist. And when we say budget, we mean the number you actually want us to respect, not the number you might be willing to spend if everyone talks you into it.
At Rouge Bridal, our wedding gowns range from approximately $1,100 to $2,600. Your stylist will help you explore dresses within the price point you’ve chosen. Remember to leave room in your overall bridal budget for alterations, a veil, accessories, and any other finishing touches you want.
If someone else is helping pay for your dress, have that conversation before your appointment. Knowing the budget and who’s contributing makes the shopping experience much more relaxed for everyone.
There is no reason to fall in love with a gown you don’t want to pay for. There are gorgeous dresses at different price points, and we’re here to help you find yours.
3. Bring the Right People Wedding Dress Shopping
This is a BIG one, girls. The people you bring to your bridal appointment can have a huge impact on your experience. Bring the people who know you, love you, and want to see you happy, even if your favorite dress isn’t what they would have chosen.
Maybe that’s your mom and sister. Maybe it’s Grandma and your Maid of Honor. Maybe it’s just your best friend.
You do NOT have to invite your entire bridal party.
Here’s our favorite way to decide: Picture yourself standing on the pedestal in the dress you love, with your veil on, ready to say YES. Who would you be sad wasn’t there for that moment? Those are your people.
At Rouge Bridal, our bridal suites accommodate up to five guests plus the bride. If you have a larger crew you can’t imagine shopping without, ask us about our private Sunday bridal appointments.
And if someone important can’t be there in person, let us know! We’re happy to help FaceTime them into your appointment.
4. What Should I Bring to My Bridal Appointment?
You don’t need to show up with a suitcase full of supplies. We promise!
If you have inspiration photos, bring them. Screenshots of gowns, necklines, fabrics, or even just an overall bridal vibe can help your stylist understand what you’re drawn to. It’s also helpful to know your wedding date, venue, and budget. Wear comfortable clothing and undergarments that make you feel good. If you already have your wedding shoes or a special accessory you know you want to wear, you’re welcome to bring them, but they’re not required to start shopping.
And please, don’t stress about having the perfect bridal underwear. Wedding gowns have different structures and support, and your stylist will help you understand what works with the dresses you try on. Before your Rouge Bridal appointment, we’ll also send you our Bridal Bio so we can get to know you, your wedding vision, and your shopping crew ahead of time.
Don’t be afraid to spill the tea. The more we know, the better we can personalize your experience.
5. Keep an Open Mind About Wedding Dress Styles
You know that wedding dress you’ve had saved on Pinterest since approximately five minutes after you got engaged? You might LOVE it. Or you might put it on and think, “Well… this isn’t what I pictured.”
And that’s okay!
Wedding gowns look completely different on a hanger than they do on your body. A dress you would walk right past might end up being the one you don’t want to take off. If your stylist suggests a gown that’s a little outside your original vision, give it a chance. Maybe you came in looking for fitted lace but discover you feel incredible in a satin ballgown. Maybe you swore you would NEVER wear strapless, and then you try on a strapless dress with amazing structure and support.
We’re not trying to change your mind about what you love. We’re helping you discover what you love on YOU.
And sometimes, that takes trying on the unexpected.
6. Don’t Let Bridal Sizing Get in Your Head
Let’s get one thing straight right now.
Bridal sizing does us DIRTY.
Wedding dress sizes often run one or two numerical sizes larger than everyday clothing, and every designer has their own size chart. So, if you normally wear a size 8 and your measurements put you in a size 12 wedding dress, please don’t let that ruin your day. Nobody is checking the size tag inside your wedding gown.
At Rouge Bridal, we take your measurements and compare them with the designer’s size chart to recommend the size that will fit your body. It’s also normal to measure between sizes. Your stylist will explain why we recommend a particular size and how alterations can help perfect the fit.
Trust the fit, not the number. The only thing that matters is that you look and feel amazing.
7. Remember: Your Opinion Matters MOST
We love moms. We love grandmas. We love bridesmaids.
But sometimes, they have OPINIONS.
Mom loves lace. Your sister wants you in a fitted dress. Your best friend thinks you should wear something trendy. Grandma isn’t quite sure about the neckline. Meanwhile, you’re standing on the pedestal thinking, “But I LOVE this one.” Girl, we want to hear from YOU.
At the beginning of your Rouge Bridal appointment, we remind everyone that we’re here to support the bride. Different people love different styles, and that doesn’t mean anyone is wrong.
But only one person is wearing this wedding dress down the aisle.
YOU.
When you try on a gown, ask yourself: Do I feel beautiful? Do I feel comfortable and confident? Can I picture myself marrying my favorite person in this dress? Give yourself a chance to answer before everyone else chimes in. A supportive entourage doesn’t have to love your dress for themselves. They just need to recognize that you love it.
8. How Many Wedding Dresses Should I Try On?
There’s no magic number. Some brides try on just a handful of gowns and find THE ONE. Other brides need to explore several styles before they figure out what feels right. Both are completely normal.
At Rouge Bridal, we like to keep one favorite as we shop. When you try on a new gown, we’ll compare it with your current favorite. If the new one beats it, we’ve got a new favorite. If not, we move on.
Why not have a top three?
You’re not getting married in your second or third choice anyway!
This helps keep the appointment fun and prevents you from getting overwhelmed by a bunch of dresses you sort of like. And don’t feel like you need to try on every gown in the store before you’re allowed to say YES.
If you’ve found a dress you LOVE, it’s okay to stop shopping.
9. Be Ready to Say YES and Know What Happens Next
When you find THE ONE, it’s helpful to know what happens next so you’re ready.
At Rouge Bridal, you can pay for your wedding gown in full or make the required 60% initial payment and pay the remaining balance over the following three months.
Our special-order gown sales are final, and the initial payment is nonrefundable, so your stylist will go over your measurements, order details, and payment terms with you before your purchase is finalized.
Then comes the fun part: celebrating your YES moment!
After your gown is ordered, we’ll contact you when it arrives and arrange for you to come try it on.
If you haven’t chosen your veil or accessories yet, that’s another great opportunity to complete your bridal look.
10. Expect Wedding Dress Alterations
Here’s something we wish every bride knew before shopping:
Needing alterations does NOT mean you bought the wrong size wedding dress.
Wedding gowns are ordered according to a designer’s standard size chart. They’re not made to your exact measurements.
That means most brides need some adjustments, even when their gown is ordered in the correct size.
Common wedding dress alterations include hemming, adjusting straps, taking in the bust or waist, and adding a bustle.
Rouge Bridal doesn’t perform alterations in-house, but we’re happy to recommend experienced bridal seamstresses.
Once your dress arrives, contact your seamstress and let her know your wedding date. She’ll tell you when to schedule your fittings based on the work your gown needs and her availability.
And when you go to your fittings, bring the shoes and undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day. They can make a difference in how your gown fits and where your hem falls.
